Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
How far is a Marathon?
A: Always too long. Or 26.2 miles.
Q:
Why
52 Marathons?
A: The idea evolved from the
fact
that running a marathon in every state was not nearly the novel idea I
thought it was at first. (Hundreds of people have accomplished the
feat). So I took it up a notch. Not long after the initial
planning entered my brain, did I happen across L'Arche Mobile.
Q: Why L'Arche Mobile?
A: What started as chance proved to be fate when I, searching for
marathons in 2006, came upon the Legg Mason First Light Marathon in
Mobile,Alabama which benefited L'Arche Mobile. It took me no time
to realize this was an organization which needed to be the beneficiary
of Fiddy2.
Q:
How will my Donation Help L'Arche?
A: All
funds raised will be used for
unrestricted operating expenses, special projects,
building improvements and endowments.
Q:
Is my Donation Tax Exempt?
A: L'Arche Mobile is a
charitable organization and is tax-exempt under 501 (c)(3) by the
IRS. Therefore, donations made to L'Arche
Mobile are tax-deductible.
Q:
Is this healthy?
A: I would never attempt anything which I feel would permanently
jeopardize my health. I like myself far too much for that.
However, I most assuredly do not think that what I am doing its
for everyone but I do know that we never know what we can do until we
find out what we cannot. And presently, I know I can run a great
deal with little rest.
Q:
Has anyone ever done this?
A: I know the world
record for consecutive weeks running a marathon is 143 but I have not
found any event as well-documented as my attempt. I sincerely
welcome any additional information on this subject.
Q:
Is this your job?
A: No. I still have an occupation where I put in over 50
hours a week during the regular work week.
Q:
Do you have an airline sponsor?
A: Presently I have no sponsorships with any airline to help
defray costs of Fiddy2.
Q:
Who pays for your hotels/rental cars/ race fees, etc?
A: The guy answering these questions. (i.e. me)
Q:
Why not just give the money you spend on travel and marathons directly
to L'Arche?
A: This is a multiple
answer. First, I am new at fundraising. In my naiviety, I
assumed that a majority of my costs would be covered by corporations
wishing to help. As for individuals, I know we often need more
than just the knowledge that "it is for a good cause" to give up
our hard-earned money. So, by doing something few, if any, have
ever done, I thought I was giving enough of myself to make others
desire to open their checkbook.
Second, I could have never expected the costs of flying would be as
high as they are (due to ongoing wars, Hurricane Katrina and other
hurricanes, etc.)
Third, even if large amounts of money from many good-willed people do
not pour in as I near the end, I have at least raised awareness of
L'Arche and its mission.
Q:
How do you choose which marathons you run?
A: Many factors go into choosing the marathons I run.
As I am
footing the bill for this excursion, it usually boils down to a matter
of which marathon costs the less or will allow me to return to my
job.
however, some are chosen for sentimental reasons or because of
relationships I have developed with other runners.
Q:
What shoes do you wear?
A: I do not have a single brand or type that I prefer. In
fact, once I had to wear a pair of shoes purchased the night before the
race as I had forgotten my shoes at home. I ran my fastest
marathon of the year up to that point that day.
Q:
Can you eat anything you want?
A: Unfortunately, I cannot. In fact, as I am not running as
many miles during the week as I normally would, I actually have to
watch what I eat to some extent.
Q:
How much do you run during the week?
A: I usually only have time to get about 3 runs in during
the week for a total of 10-15 miles. Fundraising and working does not
allow for much time to train. My "training" was last year (2005)
when I pushed my body to see if it could hold up to the vigors of
multiple long-distance races.
Q:
Are you trying to run a marathon in every state this year?
A: Given the nature of my
task to run one every single weekend, it is virtually impossible to
reach every state in 2006.
Q: How much do you weigh?
A: Approximately 180 lbs.
Q: Do you have a family?
A: I am currently
single.
Q:
Are you tired?
A: Quite. Thank you for asking.
Q:
Have you suffered any injuries or have you been ill?
A: Yes to both but nothing
which has stopped me.
Q:
How do you stay mostly injury free?
A: We give advice based on our experience and what we do to get
there. Based on my experience you stay injury free by running 52
marathons in a year! More seriously, I train hard, have luck on
my side and was smart enough to pick the right parents.
Q:
Will
you be able to successfully complete Fiddy2?
A: The surest
way to guarantee failure is to never try. That said, I have
complete faith that I will accomplish
this
goal. Besides the drive and the heart to succeed, I also have put
in the time and the training needed to see this goal through to the end
of 2006. I will be happy to take all bets against me
Q:
What will you do next year?
A: Nap. A lot.
